What is Qi Gong?
Qi Gong mainly consists of the use of physical movements or postures which incorporate intention, meditation, relaxation for mind and body, and true breathing. The aim of these physical movements and exercises is to develop an awareness of the inner Life Force (“Qi”) in our bodies, and to integrate this awareness with the mind to create better balance between both mind and body. Qi Gong guides our “Qi” towards the improvement of health and the achievement of maximum performance. This practice can help anyone, whether an athlete, a salesperson, a caretaker, a mother or a retiree to improve that optimal balance between mind and body and to enhance whatever performance that person might be interested in pursuing.
Qi Gong has been shown to improve the cardio-respiratory system, thereby improving overall health and physical functioning, as well as balance and bone health. It has also been shown to help prevent asthma and arthritis symptoms from flaring (Larkey 2010). These benefits are achieved through combining self-awareness and stress release with self-correction of daily postures and movements over time. Some have even attained a sense of inner peace as they learn to rhythmically move the body, while breathing more deeply, bringing mind and body into better balance and unleashing the body’s own self-healing capacities.
