It’s a New Year already! Create a new life adventure, starting with a healthy, mind, body and soul.
Often weight loss is the top of many New Year’s resolutions but that has proven to be somewhat of a challenge for most people as only 8% end up ever achieving their resolutions. There are a few key strategies, as a personal trainer, which I like to use in order to inspire people to reach their goals. One first step is to establish a simple road-map or plan to help you stay focused. Doing this keeps you on track so you know how you’re progressing.
I truly believe balance is the key to setting up this fitness plan and it starts with a positive mindset. So let’s start there. Here’s some food for thought to get you started: Your emotions are your inner guidance system; they alone will let you know whether you are living in an environment of biochemical health or in an environment of biochemical distress. Understanding how your thoughts and your emotions affect every single hormone and cell in your body and knowing how to change them in a healthy way gives you access to the most powerful and empowering secret on earth. Natural foods, supplements, herbs, meditation, acupuncture and so on are all powerful tools for building and protecting your health. But regardless of what supplements you take and what kind of exercise you do, when all is said and done it is your attitude, your belief in yourself and your daily thought patterns that have the most profound effect on your health. How many times have you heard someone say I don’t understand it, she always ate right and exercised how come she, of all people, got sick. On the other end of the spectrum is the person who smokes cigarettes and drinks too much alcohol yet lives without any apparent illness well into healthy old age. The answer lies, at least in part, in the individual’s attitudes and emotions. Attitudes and beliefs also influence how well your food is digested and how effective your exercise regime is. You have within you the power to create a life of joy, abundance and health or you have the same ability to create a life filled with stress, fatigue, and disease with very few exceptions. The choice is yours.
So as you start the New Year, begin your plan by making healthy food choices!
And…we’re not just talking about those dreadful Carbs…YES Carbohydrates! There always seems to be the question of whether to eat or not to eat Carbs. You say if I eat no carbs I feel deprived or hungry and let’s face it, trying to keep up with a no- eating carb diet is too hard. But when you try including carbs you gain weight or feel bloated. We would actually benefit more by pursuing a more moderate approach to kick start any weight loss program and that starts with avoiding all forms of sugar, including artificial sweeteners. Also, by avoiding all white flour products and replacing these by including whole grains and or beans at each meal – but only one cup in total. Also begin eating vegetables whenever possible and lean protein and when you’re feeling hungry choose filling healthy snacks between meals. These could be choices like: celery and hummus, edamame, Greek yogurt, low fat mozzarella cheese sticks, nuts, and seeds. By including the above items in moderate amounts you’ll get sustained energy to feed your brain without the blood sugar lulls that cause those nasty cravings.
The next area to include in your fitness plan is doing some cardio workouts to improve your heart health and help burn those extra calories. The third area is to add to our fitness plan is strength training for that extra muscle, which also helps you burn calories and keeps you lean and strong. Last but not least I recommend that you incorporate improving your balance and coordination and staying flexible by stretching so our muscles don’t get tight and this also prevents injuries and soreness. So, to wrap this all up for your New Year 2016 goals…it’s really quite simple if you think about it and put your mind to it.
Henry Ford once said: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
Make this year – your year! Don’t just make resolutions; achieve them while making the necessary changes needed to create a healthy mind and body.
